Treatment for Sinusitis

The treatment for sinus infections may include antibiotics if it is felt that a bacterial infection is to blame. Decongestants or oral steroids may also be used to help promote drainage and reduce sinus pressure.

The treatment for chronic sinusitis depends on its specific cause. Common home remedies may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Saline nasal irrigations
  • Cortisone nasal sprays, i.e Flonase
  • Antihistamines, i.e. Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec
  • Oral or injected steroids
Sinus Surgery
Sinus surgeries, including balloon sinuplasties and nasal septum repairs rarely provide any meaningful long-term relief for those suffering with chronic sinusitis. Despite this fact, these expensive and painful procedures are still very commonly recommended and performed by a large number of ENT's practicing here in the East Valley, including Scottsdale and Fountain Hills. More importantly, these surgeries do nothing to help rid patients of their allergies, which is by far the most common cause of chronic sinus issues.

One form of immunotherapy is allergy shots (or subcutaneous immunotherapy). For many reasons allergy shots are not recommended.

Allergy drops (or sublingual immunotherapy) is far more effective in several key parameters and is why allergy drops are really the only choice between the two methods.
